Average speed meters

Currently, 25 sectoral speed meters are installed on roads of national significance in Lithuania. Drivers who exceed the speed limit on the sections where the mentioned systems are installed will receive fines. The violation report will be sent in the same order as when speeding is registered with a stationary speedometer. Before entering each speed control section, drivers will be warned by special road signs informing them of the speed meters and the length of the section where the speed is measured.
In addition to the original purpose - to measure the average speed of the vehicle, in the future it will be possible to check whether the car is insured, whether it has undergone a technical inspection and whether it is not wanted in other countries. It is also planned that the system will allow checking whether vehicle drivers have paid road taxes.
The Lithuanian Road Administration points out that the purpose of the speed control system is not to punish, the most important thing is to ensure traffic safety and encourage drivers to drive at the permitted speed, as speeding is one of the main causes of serious traffic accidents. According to preliminary data, about 70 percent traffic accidents occur due to speeding.

How it works

Sectoral speedometers take pictures of the car entering and leaving the section. Speedometers have two cameras and two clocks.

Each system has two cameras. One recognizes the numbers, and the other captures the overall picture. In addition, thanks to the additional lighting, they perfectly identify the numbers in the dark. Two autonomous clocks are needed for the speed measurement system to be extremely accurate, as the average speed is calculated based on the time of entering and leaving the measuring zone.
