DJI has landed! The manufacturer of flying and filming "drones" has created a video camera, which records images reminiscent of shots captured by professional film cameras.

The company DJI is famous as a manufacturer of powerful video drones for amateurs and professionals. In the last issue of GIDO, we introduced the DJI Phantom 3 drone, which can be used to capture impressive-looking images. TECHNORAMA testers were most impressed by the excellent stabilization system, which allowed recording a smooth and absolutely shaky image in difficult weather conditions. DJI engineers decided to use the experience gained in flight on the ground! They created the DJI Osmo 4K video camera armed with a powerful image stabilization system. TECHNORAMA decided to test the capabilities of this device.

Camera construction

The device comes in a hard case that holds the video camera with a stabilization system, a hand grip and a smartphone holder that connects to it.

The camera handle fits comfortably in the hand. At its bottom there is a slot into which a removable battery with a capacity of 980 mAh is inserted. When recording the image in 4K resolution, the battery is enough for about an hour, so if we plan to film for a longer time, it is worth getting additional batteries.

In the upper part of the handle we find the camera control buttons and two sockets. The included metal smartphone holder connects to one. We will be able to insert a mobile device with a screen of up to 6 inches into it. The phone communicates with the camera via Wi-Fi. The DJI Go app installed on it displays the image captured by the camera and allows you to control various shooting settings.

When the phone holder is removed, other DJI Osmo camera accessories such as a tripod or selfie stick can be attached in its place. A stereo microphone is built into the handle. Using the 3.5 mm jack, you can additionally connect an external microphone, which will ensure even better quality of recorded sound.

At the very top of the handle there is a socket to which a video camera with a three-axis stabilization system is attached. The base model we tested has a 4K Zenmuse X3 camera, familiar to owners of the DJI Inspire 1 flying drone. This device is equipped with a 12-megapixel sensor. The camera components are housed in a small ball-shaped body, on the side of which there is a "micro SD" slot, into which a memory card with a capacity of up to 64 GB is inserted.

The wide-angle fixed focal length (20mm) camera lens has an F2.8 aperture. As we already mentioned, DJI Osmo is capable of recording images in 4K resolution (up to 4096x2160 pixels). We will also be able to capture slow-motion images with it, filming in Full HD resolution (1920x1080 pixels), at 120 frames per second. The flash of the camera is a mechanical three-axis stabilization system that "absorbs" not only vertical or horizontal movements, but also lateral movements.

Camera control

Ready for work, the video camera without a smartphone weighs 422 grams. When holding it in the hand, it seems to be much lighter, so we will not get tired even when we have to shoot for a long time. DJI Osmo control is really convenient. Before starting the filming, we unlock the locks of the motors of the stabilization system, which protect the device during transportation. Then we click and slightly hold the power button on the right of the handle. After a moment, the camera's stabilizers kick in.

The device's control buttons are located on a small panel at the top of the handle. Here we will find the recording button marked with a red dot. To take a photo, press the slightly larger button at the bottom of the panel. There's also a joystick here, which allows you to turn the camera sideways or vertically without moving the handle itself.

A "trigger" controlled by the index finger is located in the front of the handle. It makes adjusting the camera easier. When this button is held down, the camera focuses on one point and does not release it during filming, regardless of which way we turn the handle. After pressing the "trigger" twice, the camera begins to imitate the movements of our hand - the motors of the stabilization system simply absorb the annoying vibrations. After clicking the "trigger" three times, the lens turns in our direction - we can take a selfie or shoot an image in which our face will be visible.

Camera control by smartphone

A smartphone turns the DJI Osmo into a powerful video system. First of all, we will need to download and install the DJI Go app. It works on devices with Android and iOS operating systems. The first time you turn on the app, you will need to pair it with our video camera. The devices support Wi-Fi connection, so we will be able to control the camera with the phone not only after placing it in a special holder, but also at a distance of several meters from it.

DJI Go allows you to see directly on the phone screen the image that we shoot with the Osmo camera. In it, we will also be able to quickly change the settings of filming and photography, such as the ISO sensitivity of the sensor or the shutter speed.

Quality of photos and videos

DJI Osmo's stabilization system does a great job. There is no question about the annoying vibrations that occur when holding the camera in the hand or when moving - "Osmo" absorbs not only small vibrations, but also stronger shocks. Even when running or climbing stairs, the filmed image remains smooth, as if captured using a special crane and rails, which are often used by professional operators.

The Zenmuse X3 camera captures bright and rich images with high detail. A sufficiently powerful processor takes care of the processing of moving images, so they move on the screen smoothly and without jerking. The camera should be commended for its performance in low light conditions. The sensitive sensor is able to capture halftones of dark colors, and the frames it captures have little flickering noise.

Conclusions

DJI Osmo is a lightweight, easy-to-use, yet powerful 4K video camera that can capture stunning-looking images. The stabilization system used in this device absorbs unnecessary vibrations and ensures a smooth image even in the most difficult shooting conditions. DJI Osmo is perfect for people with an active lifestyle. This camera is indispensable for filming various events, architectural and natural wonders, concerts or family celebrations.

CAMERA

This rectilinear, lens gives you a dramatic wide angle without the distortion you normally get from cameras this size.

Packing power into such a small, lightweight design wasn't easy, but you can shoot video at up to 4Kp30 or 1080p60 and takes crisp, clear 12 megapixel stills.

ADVANCED GIMBAL

The technology to keep a camera smooth in the sky has long been a core DJI technology. This expertise was pushed to its limit in creating the X3 and its gimbal, giving you a completely stable camera you can hold in your hand.

The 3-axis gimbal knows how the Osmo is moving, allowing it to correct for you
movements every second. Using a network of sensors and advanced algorithms
it keeps the camera perfectly level no matter how you move.

This level of precision is only possible because of the ultra-fast, custom-made
processor that is unique to DJI. Operating at speeds that allow the system to
compensate for motion and tilt in real-time, this processor controls motors on all
three axes: yaw, tilt, and roll.

THE WORLD IN 360°

The Automatic Panorama mode makes shooting 360° panoramas easier than ever. Just hold the Osmo up above your head and tap the shutter button. The camera will rotate, capturing images as it goes while staying completely level. Don't just get a snapshot of a piece of your travels. Make a memory of the whole scene.

AUTOMATIC PANORAMA

POWER IN YOUR PALM

The grip on the Osmo is precisely engineered with materials selected for comfort and durability, and designed to ergonomically fit the palm of your hand. Conveniently placed buttons and controls keep important functions by your thumb for instant access.

Put your smartphone in the included Phone Holder to see what your camera sees and control it with a tap of your finger. Your phone is also the home of all the Osmo's powerful intelligent shooting modes.
